This is the age-old question. What should you take with you when you go for a hike? Well, look no further as I have put together this list to help give you a good idea of what you need.

1 - A Bag

A good bag is the first step to going on a hike. Getting a bag with a water bladder inside is an optional extra but one I always find of great benefit on my hikes. I recommend buying a well-known brand like Regatta or Trespass to get you started.

2 - Kendal Mint Cake

Sugar is always a good plan on a long hike and sweet treats like Romney’s famous Kendal Mint Cake has been a hikers choice for many years. Always good to have a spare in your back just in case.

3 - First Aid Kit

There are many items that you may decide you don’t need to take or that you can get cheaply, however, a good first aid kit is essential. Ideally, everyone you are hiking with should have their own first aid kit where they can keep any personal medication but as long as at least one person has a full in date kit then that's a good start. It may also be worth brushing up on some basic first aid skills before you go (apps like st john ambulance are a great place to do this). I recommend a kit like this one due to the amount you get for a small price.

4 - Map

Ordnance Survey has been making high-quality maps for a very long time and its easy to see why they are the first choice for any seasoned hiker. Both their Landranger and Explorer series are perfect for hikers, they cover every corner of the UK (but make sure you get the right one for the areas you will be in and be sure to note you may need two to get full coverage).

5 - Lunch

Although Kendal Mint Cake is a great snack to keep you going it is not a substitute for lunch so make sure you pack good nutritious food that will give you the energy to last all day. I generally try to take a pack like this with me to ensure good food without taking up weight or space in my bag and there are lots of options to choose from. They can be eaten cold or can be heated by placing them in boiling water as per the instructions on the pack.

So that is my top 5 items to take on any hike. Of course, there may be other items that I haven't mentioned so let us know in the comments if there are any things that I have missed that you would always take.
