If I told you I could make an oven out of a cardboard box you would probably tell me I was crazy (and maybe you are right). But with this simple guide I will show you how you can make one too.

What you will need

  • An open fire or a disposable BBQ (for help getting your fire started, take a look at our guide)

  • A cardboard box big enough to go over said fire or BBQ

  • A sheet of card that can be used as a lid

  • Lots of foil to wrap the card in

  • A metal cooling rack

  • 4 Metal skewers (or tent pegs)

  • A knife or pair of scissors to cut the card

How to make it

  1. Cut the flaps off the top and bottom of your box (simple so far)

  2. Cover the cardboard box and sheet of card in foil, make sure that every bit of card has been covered (it will catch fire if not)

  3. About halfway up the box push the four skewers through the card and foil in each corner then rest the cooling rack on them (this is where you will cook your food)

  4. Light your fire or BBQ and carefully place the box over the top

  5. Once hot cook your chosen meal in the oven by placing it on the rack and putting the lid on top to keep the heat in

  6. Once your meal has cooked take it out carefully and enjoy

  7. Put out your fire and let it cool before dismantling

So it's as easy as that, these ovens are great for cooking pizza's or fairy cakes whilst on camp and a great way to get the kids involved in making dinner.
